• WWF’s Ideas For Steve Austin’s Ring Name Included The Name Of A Popular Batman Villain

During the Steve Austin documentary on A&E, Austin and Mick Foley revealed some of the original ideas the World Wrestling Federation came up with, after they saw that the Ringmaster gimmick wasn’t going anywhere.

Steve received the Ringmaster name when they hired him from Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling in December of 1995, but he was going to get a gimmick change a few months later, and had pitched becoming a character similar to a legitimate serial killer he saw on TV, who had the nickname ‘The Ice Man’.

The names WWF’s creative department came up for him were:

– Mr. Freeze (popular Batman and DC Comics villain)

– Fang McFrost

– Snowman

– Cruel Luke

– Chilly McFreeze

– Cool Cat

– Ice Dagger

– Otto von Ruthless

Foley said the following about this:

“That’s a tricky situation, when you’re fairly new in the company, Mr. McMahon has agreed to give you a character change and you’re given a list from creative. The fact that I can rattle off more of Stone Cold’s names than the terrible names that I was given, speaks to just how bad they were.”

Thank God, Austin’s wife then came up with “STONE COLD” and the rest as we all know, is history!
