6. Mick Foley Recalls SummerSlam 1999 WWF Title Match
During a recent column on FOX Sports, WWE Hall of Famer & current Raw General Manager Mick Foley recalled the SummerSlam 1999 WWF Championship match. Below is what he said:
“1999, Target Center in Minneapolis. Triple Threat match for the WWF Title vs Triple H and Steve Austin with then-Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura as the referee. My memories of this weekend largely center around me taking batting practice the day before SummerSlam with the Minnesota Twins. I had not swung a bat since Little League and the result of my escapades in the batter’s box sent me into the match more sore than I had ever been going into any match in my career. I never hit one out of the park that day but I did take one to the warning track. I also got a cool, dark blue Twins jersey that had a nice, slimming effect on me. I wore that jersey a lot because few fans, especially in those days hated the Twins. I won my last of three WWE Titles at the ’99 SummerSlam in the Twin Cities but my hands were so sore from the batting cage experience that I couldn’t shake anyone’s hand.”
5. WWE Offers A Deal To Rio Olympics Wrestler
ElNuevoDia.com is reporting that WWE offered a deal to Rio Olympics wrestler Jaime Espinal. He’s from Puerto Rico and is a former silver medalist in Olympics (failed to capture the bronze medal in 86 kg category at Rio Olympics). Below is what he said about losing at the Rio Olympics:
“I knew my opponent and I knew it was someone who has won several times. It was not impossible, so I fought with everything. I’m a little sad but not heartbroken because I gave everything.”
Below is what he said about the possibility of joining WWE:
“I like it. I am quite charismatic, I think. And I like the public, people. I think I would be fine. I’ll get all offers and see which is the best ever. If WWE offers me a more comfortable life and that is the long term makes more sense. If in the struggle (Olympic) offer me things, and it is long term and quieter, as I stay in the fight.”
