5 Most Bizarre Moments From Raw Is War 1998

4. Redundant overdubbing of commentary

I love a good commentary team, and JR and King could be one of the best of all time. Yet, their commentary during the attitude era was strange. Almost every Raw is War, their commentary had been overdubbed by themselves, recalling the action, seemingly at a later date. My eyes could drift off during a match to the King and JR, their mouths may be moving without audio, and vice-versa. Commentary can only be overdubbed if Raw was pre- recorded, which makes sense, due to every second Raw was taped on the Tuesday after the live show was aired on a Monday.

In one strange instance, Raw had been recorded on a Tuesday, and was aired six days later. Between the taping and the airing of the program, Jim Ross suffered another bout of Bells Palsy and his mother had passed away, so he was indefinitely written off of television in December of 1998.

To replace him was Michael Cole, which was to have debuted at the Rock Bottom PPV. However, the Raw before Rock Bottom, JR and King are in very clear view, and throughout the night can easily be during matches and outside the ring action, yet you hear Michael Cole and Jerry Lawlers voice. Why wasn’t Michael Cole just introduced at the PPV? It looked legitimately stupid to hear different people to what you were seeing.
