CM Punk was fired by All Elite Wrestling before the All Out 2023 PPV, after an investigation into the fight between him and “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry backstage at AEW All In was concluded.
Immediately after that, speculation about the former 2-time AEW World Champion possibly returning to WWE began.
Fightful Select reported last Monday that Punk wanted to return to WWE at the Royal Rumble earlier this year, to set up a match between himself and Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 39.
This was during Punk’s time away from AEW because his future with the company was uncertain at that time and he just wanted to wrestle somewhere.
According to PWInsider, Punk’s release from AEW was an immediate topic of discussion within WWE, especially among top talents.
There were some people who were adamantly against the idea and didn’t believe it could happen, but others looked at it as a “chance to make big money”. One top talent was completely open to the idea of Punk returning to WWE.
The Latino World Order’s Zelina Vega is one wrestler who has publicly stated that she would love to see the Punk return to WWE.
Some other top wrestlers like Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and AJ Styles haven’t had good things to say about Punk in the past, but they haven’t commented on his current situation.
There are also some people like Grayson Waller who have poked fun at the situation.
For Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champion Finn Balor, it’s all about the money. In an interview with the Ringer Wrestling Show, Balor said that he would wrestle Punk for the right money.
“I’d be interested in wrestling a broomstick if someone is going to pay me money. Money talks.”
Balor along with Mr. Money In The Bank Damian Priest and NXT North American Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio recently started a feud with Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits on SmackDown.
