Below are a couple of top WWE news stories of the day, featuring SmackDown and Layla.
• Match On Friday’s SmackDown Had A Botched Finish
The ending of the match between Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green and Zelina Vega on this past Friday’s SmackDown didn’t play out as originally intended.
During the match, Green was unexpectedly counted out while engaging with fans and the announcers at ringside. Multiple sources confirmed to PWInsider that the count-out was legitimate and not scripted.
The report explains that Green “seemingly didn’t hear the referee’s count reaching 10 and thought it might restart after Vega was tossed back into the ring.” Because of that misunderstanding, the referee was forced to call the match as a legitimate count-out.
Despite the hiccup, there was no injury or underlying issue that caused the early ending. It was simply a miscommunication during the live broadcast. The match was reportedly supposed to go a bit longer, but Vega was always planned to win, so the final result still fit within the broader storyline.
The finish leads into next week’s six-woman tag match between The Green Administration and Zelina, Katana Chance & Kayden Carter on WrestleMania SmackDown.
The incident hasn’t sparked any heat backstage. As PWInsider noted, “no one backstage was upset,” and the moment was seen as one of the unpredictable aspects of performing live on TV.
• Layla Reveals If WWE Has Approached Her For A Legends Deal
Former WWE Superstar Layla El, who graced the WWE ring from 2006 to 2015, has recently addressed the possibility of signing a coveted Legends contract with her former employer.
In a recent interview with MuscleManMalcolm, Layla fielded a question regarding whether WWE had ever approached her about a Legends contract, a type of agreement many former stars now hold.
Layla revealed that communication with WWE has been absent for an extended period, attributing this to her previous stance of not being receptive to such opportunities.
However, the landscape appears to be shifting. Layla hinted at a potential change in her openness, particularly with her renewed presence on social media and current engagement within the wrestling sphere. While not confirming any immediate plans, she explicitly stated that she is not ruling out the possibility of a Legends deal in the future.
“I have not spoken to WWE in a long, long time, and I think that’s mostly because I had made it clear in the past that I really wasn’t open to a lot of that stuff,” Layla explained to MuscleManMalcolm. “But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen or won’t happen in the near future, especially now that I’m back on social media and involved with wrestling in some capacity. So, we’ll see. It’s just a wait-and-see kind of thing, right?”
Layla is set to launch a new podcast. This venture will delve into the often untold stories of the WWE Divas era, a period Layla feels is frequently misunderstood or overlooked. Leveraging her firsthand experiences, she intends to share behind-the-scenes narratives that were never broadcast to the WWE Universe.
