Michin, formerly known as Mia Yim, explained her name change upon returning to WWE in 2022.
Speaking to The Wrestling Classic, she shared that the nickname Michin, meaning “crazy” in Korean, was given to her by her mother during childhood. When she joined The OC, they encouraged her to adopt a nickname to match the group’s dynamic.
While she’s open to using Mia Yim again, Michin holds significant personal and cultural value, reflecting her Korean heritage. She sees it as a way to highlight her ethnicity and honor her mother’s influence, using her platform to bring attention to Korea in the wrestling world, where it is less prominent.
Here’s what she said:
“I know that The OC has their own nicknames, especially when they wrestled in Japan, so when I came back and joined them, they said, ‘You need a nickname; that’s just part of the crew.’
Michin is something I’ve had since I was a kid, from my mom. She would call me and my sister crazy, obviously. So to me, it was my choice picking this name. A lot of people ask why I don’t go back to Mia Yim, and I’m okay with that too. But I want everyone to know that Michin is special to me because of my mom.
It also helps me in the American market. You have luchadors and Japanese wrestling, but wrestling isn’t big in Korea. I want to use whatever platform I have to showcase my ethnicity, whether it’s wearing my varsity jacket from Virginia Union on Saturday Night Main Event or using the name Michin to show my Korean heritage.
My mom has called me and my sister this since we were little, and that’s why it means so much to me.”
