• Mick Foley Is Honored To Be The 1st Man To Get Hit With Iconic WWE Weapon
Triple H’s legendary heel run in WWE is remembered for many things, but one of the most unforgettable elements was his brutal use of a sledgehammer. The weapon became a trademark of ‘The Game’, but few fans remember who first took a hit from it – until now. In an interview with Maven, WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley shared that he was the first person Triple H ever hit with the sledgehammer. “There’s nothing fake, phony, or gimmicked about a sledgehammer. You have to know how to use it,” Foley said. “Yeah, yeah. And I’m glad to say I was the first guy Triple H hit, really. And he laid it in there.”
Mick explained that the now-famous sledgehammer shot wasn’t just a random moment. At the time, he was dealing with a meniscus injury and needed to take a break from in-ring action. Instead of simply disappearing from TV, he wanted to turn it into a story. “But when I realized I had an injury and it would be, you know, best to repair it, I would go to the company like, ‘Hey, can we work through a storyline?’” Foley recalled. “And then, when my storyline’s done, you know, let’s see if we can give somebody credit for this.”
That somebody turned out to be Triple H. The sledgehammer attack not only helped Foley step away for medical treatment, but it also helped solidify Triple H’s role as a top villain in the WWF.
Even though the moment looked painful, Mick noted that Hunter delivered the blow with care. “The secret was, he hit me in the meat of the thigh. You know? And I mean, it was, it was in there. Yeah, it hurt, but I wasn’t injured,” Foley said.
• Shawn Michaels Reunites With AAA Legend After 28 Years (Photo)
WWE had a busy weekend with two major shows on June 7. The afternoon saw Worlds Collide, a joint event with AAA, take place at the KIA Forum. That same evening, Money In The Bank was held at the Intuit Dome. Wrestlers from both promotions were featured on each card, with some even pulling double duty. But the action wasn’t just in the ring.
Backstage, there was a surprise reunion between two familiar faces. Latin Lover, whose real name is Victor Manuel Resendiz Ruiz, posted a photo on Instagram alongside Shawn Michaels, WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative. The two recreated a backstage picture they had taken 28 years ago to promote the WWF Royal Rumble 1997 pay-per-view.
Latin Lover is a former professional wrestler who competed in AAA, CMLL, TNA, and briefly in the WWF. He retired from the ring in 2012 and has since focused on acting.
