• Original Plan For Goldberg vs. Roman Reigns At WrestleMania 36
On Night 1 of WrestleMania 36 in April 2020, Goldberg was scheduled to defend the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns.
However, Reigns pulled out of the match a couple of weeks before the event due to COVID-19 and family issues.
Reigns was then replaced by Braun Strowman, who went on to defeat Goldberg to win his first (and only) World Title in WWE.
The original plan for Goldberg vs. Reigns was obviously for Reigns to defeat Goldberg, but he was actually supposed to ‘squash’ him to become the new Universal Champion and get meaner in his attitude, slowly heading towards his eventual heel turn which happened later that year.
It looks like this ‘squash’ plan could happen during their Elimination Chamber 2022 Title match, as Reigns said the following during a sit-down interview with Michael Cole on Friday’s SmackDown:
“I’m gonna ‘Goldberg’ Goldberg.”
This match is going to be Goldberg’s final match of his current WWE contract. He’s isn’t scheduled for any other date after that as of this writing. He recently revealed that he’s going to get a shoulder surgery after his contract expires.
On the other hand, Roman Reigns is scheduled to face Brock Lesnar in the main event of WrestleMania 38 (Night 2).
