8. Kurt Angle Reveals Why He Won The WWF Title At Unforgiven 2001
During his recent UK visit, former WWF Champion & TNA Hall of Famer Kurt Angle did Q&A sessions in many cities. During one of the sessions, Angle talked about him beating “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at Unforgiven 2001 for the WWF Championship. Was he originally booked to win the Title at that PPV? Below is what he said:
“I was never supposed to get the title at that point in his career, but due to 9/11, I felt that people needed an American symbol and as I was the American Hero, I felt I could do it. I called Vince McMahon and asked him if he thought it was a good idea if I won the title. After the conversation, Vince said, “I’m fine with it, but you need to talk to Stone Cold and get him to agree.”
I was a little nervous asking Austin, but when I called him up, Austin immediately agreed and said it was a good idea. This led to me winning the title at Unforgiven, but there was no long term storyline plan for me to be the champion and I went on to lose the belt two weeks later.”
