• Ric Flair Issues Statement Regarding Controversy With Chris Kanyon
The latest episode of Dark Side Of The Ring was on “The Double Life of Chris Kanyon”.
Kanyon (who wrestled in both WCW and WWF/E) dealt with depression and bipolar disorder. He committed suicide in 2010.
He went on to claim in many interviews that WWE released him in 2004 because he was an openly gay wrestler.
In 2006, Kanyon appeared on The Howard Stern Show. Ric Flair called in to the show and said Kanyon got released from WWE because he was not good enough, and not because of his sexual orientation. This was covered in this Dark Side Of The Ring episode too.
Kanyon told RF Video that he contemplated suicide after this exchange with Flair, because Flair was his hero and he looked up to him.
The Nature Boy went on to issue the following statement about this situation on Twitter:
“Breaks my heart to hear later on that he took this so hard. Calling into guests that were seen as ‘hostile’ to WWE was part of the job then. I should not have said that nobody had ‘ever’ been released; there’s no way I could have known that for sure.
I was holding the company line. Love is love and everyone should be able to love whoever and however they choose without fear of reprisal.
I wasn’t a huge Kanyon fan as a worker; but Chris Klucsarits was a hell of a good guy.”
