• The Rock Says He Hated His First WWF Name
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson had his World Wrestling Federation debut 25 years ago at the Survivor Series 1996 PPV in Madison Square Garden, where he ended up being the sole survivor in a classic Survivor Series elimination match.
Then he was announced as Rocky Maivia, a name he was given as a tribute to his dad ‘Soulman’ Rocky Johnson and his grandfather ‘High Chief’ Peter Maivia.
During a recent Q&A for his new Hollywood movie Jungle Cruise, The Rock revealed that he actually hated that name, he first debuted in WWF with.
Here’s what The Great One had to say:
“When it was first pitched to me from Vince McMahon, he says, ‘I’ve got your name and I want it to be Rocky Maivia, what do you think?’ He knows me, and this is how I speak, I got, ‘I hate it, I hate it,’ because I hated the name. I hated it.
The lineage I had allowed me to knock on the door, but I wanted my own space. While I was very proud to come from who I came from with my dad and my grandfather, and my whole family is in wrestling, I said ‘I still wanted my own space.’ I said, ‘I hate it,’ and he said, ‘Oh well, that’s your name.’”
