According to The Undertaker, WWE is no longer viewed as a sideshow attraction.
For 30 years, The Undertaker was one of WWE’s biggest stars. Though he retired after his final match in 2020, WWE has continued to thrive.
Under Triple H’s creative direction, WWE merged with UFC to form TKO, and the company has consistently broken records. Recently, WWE secured a major deal with Netflix, which will bring Monday Night RAW to the streaming service in January 2025.
On his Six Feet Under podcast with NFL Legend Shawne Merriman, Undertaker discussed WWE’s impressive growth and made a big claim: WWE is now on the same level as the NFL, MLB & NBA.
Here’s what The Deadman said:
“From when I started to where we’re at now, it’s completely different. The way it’s perceived is different. The magnitude of the events are different, sponsors are different. All of this has happened within the last 20 years.
I think we now are on the same level or close to the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, all the major sports groups and different entertainment genres, I think we are finally on that level where we’re not considered kind of like a sideshow circus kind of deal.
It’s good, it’s good to know that I was part of that development of that system. The process to get into the PC is difficult, and it’s made so because we want the very best, just like the NFL wants the very best college players.
It’s kind of the sake system. But yeah, in the last 20 years, we’ve really turned the page from kind of the sideshow deal to a major entertainment genre.”
The Undertaker last appeared on WWE programming at WrestleMania 40 in April 2024, where he chokeslammed The Rock, thus playing a big role in Cody Rhodes finishing the story by defeating Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
