During a recent interview with WrestlingNews, WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther stated that he’s one of the favorites to win the annual 30-man Royal Rumble match in January 2024.
As the winner of the Royal Rumble, he would get the opportunity to challenge for one of the Men’s World Championships (either RAW’s World Heavyweight Championship or SmackDown’s Undisputed WWE Universal Championship) in one of the main events of WrestleMania 40.
Here’s what Gunther had to say about going for a World Title in the future:
“Yeah, I mean, that’s the natural progression from now on, I think. But we will see where it goes. I’m the Intercontinental Champion. I’m not planning on losing the title.
We’ll see. Rumble’s in a few months. If I’m in there, I think I’m one of the favorites. That would lead to WrestleMania. We’ll have to see.”
WALTER joined WWE NXT UK in 2019 and ended up holding the NXT United Kingdom Championship for 870 days, thus making him by far the longest title holder in the (now defunct) championship’s legacy.
In January 2022, he was renamed Gunther and eventually debuted on the WWE main roster (SmackDown) in April, before winning the Intercontinental Championship in June 2022.
Gunther recently became the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWF/WWE history.
Earlier this year, Gunther set the record for the longest time spent in a Royal Rumble match: 1 hour, 11 minutes & 42 seconds. He entered at #1 and was the last man eliminated.
