In this flashback article, we take a look at an old shoot interview with WCW Veteran Erik Watts, where he talked about his interaction with Steve Austin in WCW.

Below is what he said:

“Steve Austin used to come in. I don’t care who it was. This isn’t Stone Cold. This is Hollywood Blond Steve Austin. He was the same Steve Austin. His name wasn’t Stone Cold yet. And Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and they all used to tell me that Ricky Dragon, Rick Rude… there’s four or five guys that would sit there and watch every match. And I was like, “Wow, these guys really study wrestling.” They’re studying but you know what they wanted? To have the best match that night.

And even Steve Austin, Steve Austin said some of the most brutal stuff to me. He’d say, “Oh man, I’ve got to carry your green a$$ around the ring. That sucks.”

But it makes it kind of better because when we turn around the house, we have the best match. I just proved that I’m that good. Now it had nothing to do with me. He was giving me a zinger anyway. But I think that he believed in his heart, no matter who he had or not because he wrestled some of the top guys and he won the best match.

I don’t think his match stopped….I think we’re in Houston, Texas when I think he was wrestling. I don’t know if you heard about it, one of the fans started shooting a gun in the stadium. And I mean first you hear “boom boom” and all of a sudden you hear crowd going, “Aaaaaaa!”

I think Austin was still wrestling the match. And we found out later on the guy who was shooting in the ground and he was mental and they took him out. But he never stopped his match. I mean that’s how focused he was. I mean one of the most focused athletes. Again, another person that trained me.

When I met him, I came up and said, “Hey Austin, my name is Erik Watts.” Because I always introduced myself to everybody. He said, “Yeah.” I said, “Well, I’m wrestling you tonight.” He said, “Yeah.” I said,”What would you like to do?”

He said, “Son, there’s only two things that are gonna happen in here. I’m gonna whoop your a$$ and you’re gonna brush up against success.” And I said, “What?” And he goes,” I’m gonna whoop your a$$ and you’re gonna have a brush with success because I’m success.”

I didn’t know how to react.

10 years later I opened up a company and then ended up doing very good and I actually sent him a t-shirt and I named my company: ‘Brush with Success’.”
