Mark Calaway’s Pre-Undertaker Gimmicks

2. “Mean” Mark Callous

Mean Mark Callous The Undertaker

Now comes a character that a lot of the Old School early 90s NWA/WCW Fans out there will remember very well: “Mean Mark”, one half of the dominant tag team “The Skyscrapers”, where he replaced an injured Sid Vicious to team with “Dangerous” Dan Spivey, managed by Teddy Long.

Mean Mark’s biggest claim to fame during his time in Ted Turner’s promotion, came when he challenged Lex Luger for the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship at the Great American Bash 1990 PPV, but lost the match via pinfall.

Fun Fact:

While still being known as “Mean” Mark Callous, in his last WCW match after he already gave his notice before jumping ship to the WWF, Mark had to replace Barry Windham, challenging for Sting’s NWA World Heavyweight Championship on September 1, 1990, but of course did the job for the Stinger.

That way a match that is nowadays known as one of the biggest “Dream Matches” of all time, Undertaker vs. Sting, actually happened, though under different circumstances, untelevised and while playing another character.
