4. Sgt. Slaughter says “I want my country back”
Returning as an Iraq Sympathizer in the Summer of 1990, Sgt. Slaughter became one of the most hated Heels of All Time. At one point in early 1991, he was booked to burn the American Flag on TV, but the (in real life still very patriotic) Sgt. refused to do it by saying “I would get assasinated if I’d do that” … so he ended up burning Hulk Hogan’s shirt instead.
After losing the WWF World Title against Hogan at WWF WrestleMania VII and losing the ‘Match Made In Hell’ Main Event at WWF Summerslam 1991, he would disappear for a few weeks, only to show up on TV, on the sides of american monuments, saying he wants his country back!
In the upcoming months the WWF would team him up with fellow Patriot ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan, in order to complete Sgt. Slaughters Babyface turn.
