• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (January 19, 1997) – WWF Royal Rumble 1997

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on January 19, 1997, the World Wrestling Federation aired their annual ‘Royal Rumble’ event LIVE on PPV from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

This was the first Royal Rumble match out of three (97,98 & 01) that was won by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, but he won this one in a very controversial way as he was originally eliminated but the referees did not see it.

WWF Intercontinental Championship: Hunter Hearst Helmsley (c) defeated Goldust

Ahmed Johnson defeated Faarooq by DQ

Vader defeated The Undertaker

Canek, Héctor Garza & Perro Aguayo defeated Fuerza Guerrera, Heavy Metal & Jerry Estrada

Stone Cold Steve Austin won the 30-man Royal Rumble match

WWF World Heavyweight Championship: Shawn Michaels defeated Sycho Sid (c)

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on January 19, 1992, the World Wrestling Federation aired their annual ‘Royal Rumble’ event LIVE on PPV from the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York.

This is widely considered both, the single greatest Royal Rumble PPV and the single greatest Royal Rumble match of all time.

Also quite possibly “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair’s finest hour …

WWF Intercontinental Championship: Roddy Piper defeated The Mountie (c)

The Beverly Brothers defeated The Bushwhackers

WWF Tag Team Championship: The Natural Disasters defeated The Legion of Doom (c) by countout

Ric Flair won the 30-man Royal Rumble match and the vacant WWF World Heavyweight Championship

• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (January 19, 1991) – WWF Royal Rumble 1991

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on January 19, 1991, the World Wrestling Federation aired their annual ‘Royal Rumble’ event LIVE on PPV from the Miami Arena in Miami, Florida.

Despite the rule of “Royal Rumble Winner faces the World Champion at WrestleMania” not being established until 1993, that was still exactly what happened in 1991, when Rumble winner Hulk Hogan went on the wrestle WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter (who won the belt at the Rumble PPV) at WrestleMania 7.

This is widely considered one of the best Royal Rumble PPVs, including one of the best Royal Rumble matches in history.

On a sidenote, the Mountie/Koko match was edited out of quite a few VHS releases of this PPV.
