Ric Flair's 5 Greatest Opponents

4. “The Macho Man” Randy Savage

Vince McMahon himself approached Ric Flair, then the reigning and defending NWA World Heavyweight Champion, in 1988, to quit Jim Crockett Promotions (representing the National Wrestling Alliance on national TV) and join his World Wrestling Federation, then the #1 Company on the planet.

The plan was, to have Flair instantly go on and challenge the current WWF Champion ‘The Macho Man’ Randy Savage for his World Title in the Main Event of WWF SummerSlam 1988.

But it never happened and Flair ended up staying with the National Wrestling Alliance until a dispute with Jim Herd during the summer of 1991, which is when he finally jumped ship to the WWF.

In 1992, after Hogan was out of the WWF WrestleMania VIII main event, the World Wrestling Federation had to name a new #1 Contender for Ric Flair’s World Title, and they decided on The Macho Man himself, Randy Savage.

To spice up the feud between these 2, they had Ric present photoshopped pictures of him having a good time with Randy’s wife, the gorgeous Miss Elizabeth, pretending “She was mine before she was yours”.

In arguably one of the best matches of WrestleMania 8, Randy Savage would defeat Ric Flair to win his 2nd and last ever WWF World Title.

Their Rivalry wouldn’t end there though, and on an episode of WWF Prime Time Wrestling on September 1, 1992, The Nature Boy would re-capture his WWF Championship with the help of a debuting “Bad Guy” Razor Ramon.

This would become Ric Flair’s 2nd and final run with the World Title in the World Wrestling Federation, before leaving for WCW in early 1993.

It wouldn’t take very long though, for the Macho Man to follow Ric to World Championship Wrestling, so in late 1994, both found themselves again, wrestling for the same company.

They would continue their feud in 1995 with multiple PPV matches, trading victories back and forth, with the Bash at the Beach PPV match even airing on an episode of David Hasselhoff’s famous TV Show Baywatch.

On January 22, 1996 Randy Savage would beat The Nature Boy to win back his WCW World Heavyweight Championship that he had lost to Flair a month earlier at Starrcade.

But shortly thereafter, Miss Elizabeth would follow her former Husband to WCW and turn on him during the WCW Superbrawl VI Steel Cage Match, thus helping Ric Flair to get the victory and win back the WCW World Title.

Both would wrestle a couple more matches, some on WCW Monday Nitro, but most on untelevised House Shows in 1997-1999, before Randy Savage retired from Professional Wrestling for good in 2000.
