Because of his lifelong illness of gigantism & acromegaly, doctors have told Andrè that he wouldn’t reach the age of 40. At the time he died he was 46 years old.
Undefeated for several years (storyline wise) he became one of the greatest Professional Wrestling Superstars of the 1970s and 1980s.
As a beloved Babyface, the gentle Giant would tour the Territories as a special attraction, but his true loyalty was always with the World Wrestling Federation.
The Highlight of his career came in 1987 when he turned Heel and faced WWF champion Hulk Hogan in the Main Event of WrestleMania 3 at the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit, Michigan.
After that his health started getting a lot worse and he had his last (televised) WWF Match in 1990, allthough still competing in Tag & 6 man Tag matches in Japan & Mexico until late 1992.
André passed away in his sleep because of a heart failure on January 27, 1993.
