7 Times WWE Chose The Wrong Royal Rumble Winner

7. Edge – 2010

"Rated R Superstar" Edge

Edge

As much of a great moment it may have been, Edge probably shouldn’t have won the 2010 Royal Rumble. Now, I know what you may be thinking, Edge deserved the WrestleMania world title match, and his match against then-World Champion Chris Jericho was a very good contest, although, the WWE Creative team couldn’t really decide what the future held for Edge.

Having him return from a massive Achilles tendon injury to face his evil former-partner for the World title was a great idea, however, it didn’t seem to make much sense. Why would Edge want to fight his former buddy? There was no explanation. To make Edge seem worthy to be in the contest, they had him win the Royal Rumble, but once he stepped into the 26th WrestleMania, he was made to look like a chump, losing clean to Jericho. After that he feuded with Jericho for a bit and feuded with the Anonymous Raw GM. It wasn’t until November that they found something worthy for him on Smackdown.

ALTERNATIVE WINNER: Jack Swagger

It sounds ridiculous, but Swagger winning the Rumble would have made a little bit more sense. Swagger pinned Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship later that week, which means the plans were to have Swagger hold the title post-‘Mania, so why not give him the title at Wrestlemania anyway? Swagger winning would have been a big surprise and a good thing to have on a resume of someone WWE obviously had faith in. Plus, this would have been a very big step for new talent representation. Throwing Edge into the match would have made the match better as well, as long as we knew why he was there.
