7 Times WWE Chose The Wrong Royal Rumble Winner

3. Bret Hart & Lex Luger – 1994

Lex Luger in WWF

Lex Luger

There is a simple reason why this has landed on the list, this Royal Rumble outcome is ridiculous. The fact that TWO men won a Royal Rumble match shows me that the WWF did not know the direction they planned to go and couldn’t make up their mind until show time. An entertaining concept, maybe, but not one that should be practised. The Royal Rumble needs a lone winner to advance to WrestleMania for the championship title and without that, the WWF just danced around it until they decided who would be ‘the real winner’.

Watching WrestleMania X is strange because the concept of two separate challengers is strange, and not at all fair to the champion, Yokozuna. Placing two baby-faces as contenders is risky because the WWF was at a position where one could be more favoured than the other, and therefore, be negatively received from half of the audience who wanted ‘Challenger B’ to win. All in all, it was a big mess. We are all just very lucky that WrestleMania X became a cracker of a show and the right man walked away with the championship raised above his head.

ALTERNATIVE WINNER: Owen Hart, Either of the two winners.

Having either of these men win the match is acceptable because it sets a direct course for WrestleMania against champion ad challenger instead of two challengers clashing heads. Owen Hart would have been a perfect candidate to win the match and, in fact, he won a Royal Rumble match at a live event in January of that year (believe it or not). He and his brother Bret put on an amazing contest at WrestleMania X that some say was better than the ladder match of that show. Owen v. Bret would become a big rivalry throughout the coming months, even winning 1994’s ‘Feud of the Year’. To kick-start a feud that was already brewing, a WrestleMania Title match would have been awesome to watch.
