7 Times WWE Chose The Wrong Royal Rumble Winner

2. Mr. McMahon – 1999

Vince McMahon

Mr. McMahon

How can you mention Royal Rumble failures without Mr. McMahon’s valiant win, after entering in at #2, outlasting every competitor with ease and resilience for over 50 minutes! To be completely honest, I love McMahon’s Rumble win and every time I watch it, I get goose-bumps and it makes me laugh. However, as entertaining as it was, it was still a silly move.

Mr. McMahon isn’t a trained wrestler and shouldn’t be outlasting everyone else on the roster. It made all the Royal Rumble participants look like fools as Mr. McMahon, who (as Y2J once said) “has the athletic ability of a slug” beat every one of them. What makes even less sense is that he gave up his title match at WrestleMania the next night on Raw (and proceeding to challenge Austin for the WM title match in February was even more bizarre). So… wait… why even enter the match if you don’t want the championship title? It just didn’t really make a lot of sense (and even less sense considering he won the WWF Championship later that year).

ALTERNATIVE WINNER: ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin

Austin was the plan going into WrestleMania, and they may as well have made it the straight-forward plan it should have been, instead of twisting it a completely different way to get the planned result. Austin winning would have saved time. Time I have spent wondering why WWF decided to book Austin’s road to WrestleMania XV in such a way.
