In 2001 Vince McMahon bought his own competition!
On March 26, 2001 a simulcast of WWF RAW on TNN and WCW Nitro on TNN happened, with Vince McMahon & Shane McMahon appearing on both channels.
It was announced that (in kayfabe storyline) Shane McMahon had purchased WCW, and soon would join an Alliance on WWF Television, after an attempt of bringing back WCW TV during an episode of WWF RAW failed big time, when ratings went south during a WCW themed Buff Bagwell vs. Booker T match.
After Team WWF defeated Team Alliance (WCW/ECW) at the 2001 Survivor Series, whatever was left of WCW was officially dead and buried.
Killing his own competition was no doubt a huge short term success but did hurt Vince’s promotion in the long run, as we can easily tell nowadays.
Without any competition around, the TV quality has drastically decreased and there is no sight of change on the horizon either.
