5 Wrestlers Who Left Their Company As World Champions

4. “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan (2000)

The infamous incident known as the “WCW Screw Job” happend on July 9, 2000 at the WCW Bash at the Beach 2000 PPV.

The man who single-handedly ruined WCW financially and by far the worst booker in Professional Wrestling History, Vince Russo had booked Jeff Jarrett to defend his WCW World Heavyweight Championship by beating “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan.

Contrary to popular belief, this was the FIRST and ONLY time, that the Hulkster used the famous ‘Creative Control’ clause in his contract and told Russo that his booking absolutely sucks and there was nothing to gain by having Jarrett beating him, so Hogan decided he would go over instead.

There are various different Versions of what happened next, and even Vince Russo has changed his story about 3 times over the years.

But at least it’s clear that the Hulkster, eventho he heard rumors about it earlier that day and wasn’t really surprised by it, believed Jarrett laying down for him and Russo’s Anti-Hogan promo afterwards, was both a Shoot (a real life scenario), which is why he took the WCW World Heavyweight Championship with him and left the building.

Later that evening Vince Russo booked Booker T to become the new World Champion, including a new Title Belt being introduced, since the old one was still in Hulk’s possession.

As a result of this incident, Hulk Hogan sued Russo & WCW for “Character Defamation”.
