Oct. 1 in Canton, Ohio, the Oct. 5 WCW Saturday Night was taped. Mid-way into the show during Mark Starr vs. Brad Armstrong, Ted DiBiase and Vince (a/k/a Virgil) walked into the crowd. DiBiase said it’s an election year and the fans have to choose which wrestling organization they want to follow – WCW or “a winner like the NWO.” DiBiase said next Saturday on “NWO Saturday Night” they will start the NWO Invitational Tag Tournament featuring Scott Hall & Kevin Nash. Schiavone later said that next week’s show would still be WCW Saturday Night but with an NWO segment, but eventually the NWO would get their own show.
Later during the Harlem Heat vs. Public Enemy match, Hall, Nash, Giant, and Six entered the arena and stood among the fans watching to see who Hall & Nash would face for the tag titles at Halloween Havoc. Fans chanted “Diesel.”
What WCW slickly removed from the tape of the Harlem Heat-Public Enemy tag title match was a full-fledged riot in the crowd. A fan in the crowd (who happened to be white) threw trash at the NWO. Another fan (who happened to be black) yelled at that fan to stop. Another fan (this one black) punched the white anti-NWO fan. A fight broke out among dozens if not hundreds of fans, with the line being divided somewhat but not entirely along racial lines. The NWO wrestlers stepped away from the scene and weren’t involved in the fight. Police were called and arrived with police dogs to break up the fight which went on for about five or ten minutes. It did not appear to eyewitnesses that anyone was badly harmed.
