The History Of The nWo

In a predictable finish, Hollywood Hogan beat Ric Flair to retain the WCW Title at SuperBrawl. After ten minutes of good action that saw both men blade, Torrie Wilson came to the ring and slapped Flair. A short time later, a hooded man wearing a Wolfpac shirt came to the ring and used a taser on Flair, allowing Hogan to score the pin. The man unmasked, revealing himself to be Flair’s oldest son David. David then kissed Wilson in mid?ing, playing into the storyline that Wilson seduced David and talked him into turning on his father. Later, David kicked Flair and shook hands with Hogan. Kevin Nash came to the ring. He made the Wolfpac hand signal and touched signs with David. As the show ended, the foursome celebrated in the ring as a bloody Flair lay motionless on the mat. The finish of the match didn’t come as a surprise to many as word had leaked that David would be revealed as the mystery man behind the camera of the recent hotel skits on Nitro.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the match was the aggressive manner Hogan worked. Since his turn, Hogan has played the role of a “cowardly” heel, backing down from his opponents and staying on the defensive. However, at SuperBrawl, Hogan no?old several of Flair’s moves, dominated the offense, and never backed down from him. Some are saying Hogan is attempting to become a modern?ay heel, while others claim Hogan and Nash are attempting to bury Flair. The next night on Nitro, those who believe it was an attempt to bury Flair were given even more ammunition as Hogan and Nash partook in the second Four Horsemen parody.

The first Horsemen parody took place on Nitro on Sept. 1, 1997 with Nash, Syxx, Marcus Bagwell, and Konnan playing the roles of Arn Anderson, Ric Flair, Curt Hennig (then with the Horsemen), and Steve McMichael respectively. While looked at as show stealing, the spoof turned out to be highly controversial as Flair and Anderson were offended by it and refused to appear for their scheduled segment later in the show. Anderson’s wife was upset that Anderson’s drinking habits had been brought up on national TV and Anderson’s son, twelve years old at the time reportedly cried after viewing the skit.

In the latest skit, Nash reprised his Anderson role and played on the same drinking themes even though Flair and Anderson were told about plans for the skit ahead of time and assured it wouldn’t be personally embarrassing.
