Hall wins 60 man battle royal
In the main event of the World War 3 pay-per-view on Nov. 23, Scott Hall won the 60-man battle royal to earn a WCW Title shot at SuperBrawl in February. The first 59 combatants entered the three rings, but the 60th man, Kevin Nash, never came out. The announcers played it off as if Nash’s knee injury prevented him from competing.
Twenty minutes into the largely nondescript mass of fighting bodies, Giant cleared out all of the combatants in one ring. The NWO members cleared out another ring. Dallas Page, Booker T., Lex Luger, and Rick Steiner were the lone survivors of the other ring. The NWO challenged the WCW wrestlers to enter their ring. They accepted the challenge. Giant sat back and watched as the rest of the wrestlers began brawling.
The final four in the match were Giant and Page facing Savage and Hall. Giant caught Savage coming off the top rope. Page gave Savage a diamond cutter, but Giant blocked his elimination, wanting to get in a chokeslam first. Giant gave Savage a gingerly chokeslam, then shoved him under the bottom rope to eliminate him (there was no explanation for why Savage was eliminated by going under the bottom rope, rather than over the top rope). Hall skipped to the middle of the ring and signalled to the back. Then the Outsider’s music began playing. No one came out. Then Hulk Hogan’s music began playing and he walked out. At 28:00 Hall and Nash faced off against Page & Giant as the final four in the match.
A fresh Hogan slammed a winded Giant, then punched away at his face. After Page was eliminated, “Sting” came down from the ceiling apparently to help even the odds. The announcers sold it as if it were the real Sting, but when he climbed over the top rope a la Nash, they grew suspicious. Hogan “ran from Sting” to eliminate himself, but then “Sting” bashed Giant with a baseball bat and knocked him over the top rope. “Sting” revealed himself to be Kevin Nash (which was obvious from his height). He then eliminated himself by walking over the top rope and jumping to the floor to go after Giant some more. Hall stood in the ring as the lone survivor. The rest of the NWO came out to celebrate Hall’s victory. Hogan continued to beat on Page, including giving him a Diamond Cutter. Tenay called the NWO antics the “ultimate swerve.”
